Q1 Why is weight adjusted in obese patients for CrCl?
Adipose tissue does not produce creatinine. Using actual body weight in obese patients overestimates renal clearance, which can lead to dangerously high drug doses.
Q2 What is a normal creatinine clearance range?
Normal ranges are roughly 95-135 mL/min for healthy young men and 85-125 mL/min for healthy young women. Rates decline naturally with age.
Q3 Can this tool be used for children?
No. The Cockcroft-Gault formula is validated only for adults. Pediatric kidney function is estimated using the Schwartz equation.
Q4 What is the difference between GFR and CrCl?
Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR) is the actual filtration rate, while Creatinine Clearance (CrCl) is an estimation based on creatinine levels. They correlate closely but are calculated differently.
Q5 Can I use this for patients with acute kidney injury (AKI)?
No. Cockcroft-Gault assumes a stable baseline serum creatinine. In AKI, serum creatinine is changing rapidly, making the estimation inaccurate.
