TDS Questions

Quick help
Q1 What is Tax Deducted at Source (TDS)?
TDS is a system introduced by the Income Tax Department where the person responsible for making specified payments (like salary, commission, professional fees) deducts tax at the source before transferring the remaining amount to the payee.
Q2 What happens if a payee does not provide their PAN?
If the payee does not furnish a valid Permanent Account Number (PAN) to the deductor, the TDS will be deducted at a higher rate under Section 206AA (typically at a flat 20% or the standard rate, whichever is higher).
Q3 What is a TDS Certificate and why is it important?
A TDS Certificate (e.g., Form 16 for salaries, Form 16A for non-salaried payments) is issued by the deductor to the deductee as proof that tax has been deducted and deposited with the government. It is crucial for claiming tax credit during ITR filing.
Q4 Does TDS mean that my tax liability is fully paid?
No, TDS is only a prepayment of tax. Your final tax liability is calculated when you file your Income Tax Return. If your actual tax liability based on total income is higher, you must pay the difference; if lower, you can claim a refund.
Q5 Are my payee details or PAN values uploaded to the server?
No. All category selections, threshold calculations, and PAN-related TDS rates adjustments are processed client-side in your local browser sandbox. We do not track, log, or upload any parameters to our databases.
